THE MOUNT LAKE COTTAGE HISTORY

Welcome To The Old Winchester Lodge on Mount Lake

In 1925 Dr. Winchester from Michigan purchased a lumber camp which became know as
The Old Winchester Lodge. The deed was recorded under Elizabeth The Queen (EQ25 Twnshp. Sagard District of Algoma Mississagi Provincial Forest)
The property remained in the Winchester family until the 1970's.
I am the second owner and being from the area I can spin many Yarns about the property's history.
The Winchester Lodge was only accessible by going to Iron Bridge and following a curvy gravel road which is now know as highway 546 and ends at Frontier Lodge

Uranium was discoverd and In the early 1950's a new community named Elliot Lake emerged .

My father was a miner and because he had a large family Rio Algom let him have one of the first homes built in neighbourhood one on Lakeview road.

The Province Of Ontario decided to extend highway 108 and link it to highway 546 from Quirke mine. I was flown into Laurentian Lodge and then to Semiwhite Lake where we set up tents for the survey crew. It was in the winter and all the equipment and grub was supplied by the department of highways. What a crash course in wilderness living ! This location is now a provincial campground

I then worked with the construction company which built the raod . This gave me the opportunity to work with Jack Hammers and Heavy Equipment .
I can proudly boast that I helped build the road to my camp , which is now only a mere half hour SCENIC DRIVE from Elliot Lake.
